Parallel Modes

A Ionian The Ionian mode (Major scale) is a 7-note scale notes based on the interval pattern of: whole step - whole step - 1/2 step - whole step - whole step - whole step - 1/2 step. This known as the scale with a natural 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th. In the parallel approach, all of the other modes will be compared to this. For example, when comparing the Mixolydian to the Ionian mode it would be seen that the the difference is that the Mixolydian has a b7. In other words "Compared to the major scale (Ionian mode) what has changed?" When the chord progression is based around the first chord of a major scale, solo with the Ionian mode. Also useful is the major pentatonic base on the 1st note of the major scale.

A Dorian The Dorian minor mode has a b3 and a b7 compared to the Ionian mode of the same root. This is the parallel way of looking at modes. In other words "Compared to the major scale (Ionian mode) what has changed?" Solo with the Dorian minor mode and the minor pentatonic

A Phrygian The Phrygian mode has a b2, b3, b6 and a b7 compared to the Ionian mode of the same root. This is the parallel way of looking at modes. In other words "Compared to the major scale (Ionian mode) what has changed?

A Lydian The Lydian mode has a #4 compared to the Ionian mode of the same root. This is the parallel way of looking at modes. In other words "Compared to the major scale (Ionian mode) what has changed?" Besides the Lydian mode, solos can incorporate the major pentatonic based on the root of the root of the major scale

A Mixolydian The Mixolydian mode has a b7 compared to the Ionian mode of the same root. This is the parallel way of looking at modes. In other words "Compared to the major scale (Ionian mode) what has changed?" Besides the Mixolydian mode, solos can incorporate the major pentatonic based on the root of the root or 5th of the major scale

A Aeolian The Aeolian mode has a b3, b6 and a b7 compared to the Ionian mode of the same root. This is the parallel way of looking at modes. In other words "Compared to the major scale (Ionian mode) what has changed?

A Locrian The locrian mode has a b2, b3, b5, b6 and a b7 compared to the Ionian mode of the same root. This is the parallel way of looking at modes. In other words "Compared to the major scale (Ionian mode) what has changed?

Derivative Modes

A Ionian The Ionian mode (Major scale) is a 7-note scale notes based on the interval pattern of: whole step - whole step - 1/2 step - whole step - whole step - whole step - 1/2 step. The derivative way of looking at modes is to realize which major scale/Ionian mode a particular mode comes from. In other words "What modes can be derived from the major scale (Ionian mode)?" For example the Dorian mode is the 2nd mode of a major scale. All of the modal scales derived from the major scale have exactly the same notes but with different starting points and melodic priorities. When the chord progression is based around the first chord of a major scale, solo with the Ionian mode. Also useful is the major pentatonic base on the 1st note of the major scale.

B Dorian When the chord progression is based around the 2nd chord of a major scale it is called the Dorian minor mode. This is the derivative way of looking at modes. In other words "What modes can be derived from the major scale (Ionian mode)?" All of the modal scales derived from the major scale have exactly the same notes but with different starting points and melodic priorities. Dorian solos can incorporate the minor pentatonic scale starting on the 2nd note of the major scale as well the Dorian minor scale which is the Ionian scale starting on the 2nd note.

C# Phrygian When the chord progression is based around the 3rd chord of a major scale it is called the Phrygian minor mode. This is the derivative way of looking at modes. In other words "What modes can be derived from the major scale (Ionian mode)?" All of the modal scales derived from the major scale have exactly the same notes but with different starting points and melodic priorities. Phrygian solos can incorporate the minor pentatonic scale starting on the 3rd note of the major scale as well the Phrygian minor scale which is the Ionian scale starting on the 3rd note.

D Lydian When the chord progression is based around the 4th chord of a major scale it is called the Lydian major mode. This is the derivative way of looking at modes. In other words "What modes can be derived from the major scale (Ionian mode)?" All of the modal scales derived from the major scale have exactly the same notes but with different starting points and melodic priorities. Lydian solos can incorporate the major pentatonic scale starting on the 1st note of the major scale as well the Lydian major scale which is the Ionian scale starting on the 4th note.

E Mixolydian When the chord progression is based around the 5th chord of a major scale it is called the Mixolydian major mode. This is the derivative way of looking at modes. In other words "What modes can be derived from the major scale (Ionian mode)?" All of the modal scales derived from the major scale have exactly the same notes but with different starting points and melodic priorities. Mixolydian solos can incorporate the major pentatonic scale starting on the 1st note of the major scale as well the Mixolydian major scale which is the Ionian scale starting on the 5th note.

F# Aeolian When the chord progression is based around the 6th chord of a major scale it is called the Aeolian minor mode. This is the derivative way of looking at modes. In other words "What modes can be derived from the major scale (Ionian mode)?" All of the modal scales derived from the major scale have exactly the same notes but with different starting points and melodic priorities. Aeolian solos can incorporate the minor pentatonic scale starting on the 6th note of the major scale as well the Aeolian minor scale which is the Ionian scale starting on the 6th note.

G# Locrian When the chord progression is based around the 7th chord of a major scale it is called the locrian minor mode. This is the derivative way of looking at modes. In other words "What modes can be derived from the major scale (Ionian mode)?" All of the modal scales derived from the major scale have exactly the same notes but with different starting points and melodic priorities. locrian solos use the locrian minor scale which is the Ionian scale starting on the 7th note.
